2011 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, reinvented, and better in every respect. introductionthe 2011 ford explorer is not only the beginning of a new generation, but of a new life. Ford calls it 100 percent reinvented, and it's the truth, and it's all good.  this reinvention of the venerable ford explorer is 4 inches longer, 5 inches wider, and makes the third row standard. Yet it's 100 pounds lighter. Its engine has 80 more horsepower and gets 25 percent better fuel mileage. Its price is $1100 lower than the previous model.  the 2011 explorer pretty much blows its competition out of the water, with first-in-class epa fuel mileage of 17 city/25 highway miles per gallon, first-in-class horsepower (tied with jeep grand cherokee), first in cargo capacity and second-row legroom. Ford claims 10 segment exclusives, including some in safety, with optional inflatable rear seatbelts 195) and standard curve control, which applies braking to individual wheels as needed to correct corner trajectory.  there are three explorer models, base, xlt and limited. Each seats 7 passengers, and uses the new 3. 5-liter v6 engine, 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, with a new 6-speed automatic transmission. It has 237 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque, gets one more mile per gallon, and likely won't cost any less.  the optional 4wd terrain management system uses no transfer case. The driver selects the terrain with a knob (normal, sand, mud/ruts, or snow/gravel), and the car does the rest, flawlessly. It has beefy but smooth proportions, with short overhangs and fluid lines that are 12 percent more aerodynamic than before.  the chassis is super rigid, using twice as much high-strength steel as the old. There's also some boron steel whose strength is not only high, it's also thin and it bends more easily, to form the explorer's front bumper beam, allowing the fenders to wrap gracefully and fade away at the corners. Such curves also help to transmit crash energy down and outside, away from the cabin.  there's a segment-leading 80. 7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front seats, with the split rear rows folded, which they do at the touch of a button on each side, bouncing back up with the pull of a lever. There's outstanding second-row legroom of 39. 8 inches, with good third-row space at 33. 2 inches.  ford's stated goal was to make the explorer's interior look expensive, like the cabin of a bmw x5 or audi q7. They've succeeded, at least on the explorer limited, whose leather seats are perfect, both in bolstering and stiffness/softness.  the front seat elevates high. The explorer will be a versatile family vehicle, so the seats have memory for the xlt and limited, while the steering wheel and pedals adjust for different drivers in the family. Mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with optional manual shifting, we found the power and acceleration to be smooth and responsive, with plenty of torque to maintain 80 mph on an uphill freeway, after a smooth and welcome kickdown to 5th gear.  ford put all the engineering effort it could muster into the new explorer, and got the ride, handling, and nvh results they hoped for. The rigid chassis and careful tuning of the independent suspension produce a superb all-around ride. We found the new explorer takes corners and undulations flat (without excessive leaning), and the speed-sensitive electric power steering enables it to turn relatively tight and quick.  we tested the explorer off-road as well as on the highway. The terrain management system uses no transfer case. Even with all-season tires (as opposed to all-terrain tires which improve traction in snow, sand and mud), the explorer blasted around a sand pit and traversed deep ditches and steep hills, no problem. It was the smoothest ride we've ever encountered over such terrain.  two-thirds of all 6 million explorers sold over the last 20 years are still on the road, says ford. The explorer vehicle engineering team took prototypes of the new model over towering colorado passes, buried them in deep sand in the california desert, carved through snow in minnesota and northern michigan, traversed mud bogs in alabama, and logged countless development miles at arizona and michigan proving grounds.  all three 2011 explorer models seat seven passengers. Initially, all use the new 3. 5-liter v6 engine with new 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2. 4-liter turbocharged and ballyhooed ecoboost motor will be available later in the year. Also standard are first-row airbags, side seat airbags, and side curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; tire pressure monitoring system, and front ratcheting headrests. Optional safety equipment includes inflatable rear seatbelts 195), blind spot system with cross-traffic alert 495), adaptive cruise control, and collision warning with brake support. walkaroundthe 2011 explorer is a looker. It truly looks 100 percent reinvented, ford's motto for the car. And it is a car; we can stop saying truck for almost every suv now, and maybe even stop saying crossover, because they've just about all crossed over. Such curves also help to transmit crash energy down and outside, away from the cabin.  the explorer is 4 inches longer and 5 inches wider than before, and its width is evident in its confident stance, but its smooth styling cheats the eye. It has beefy but smooth proportions, with short overhangs and fluid lines that are 12 percent more aerodynamic than before. Details such as the liftgate spoiler lip and flexible lower front air dam (black) were tweaked in the wind tunnel. We still like body-colored better.  the hood looks short from the side but long when looking straight down it; it's got two parallel humps and a scoop in the center, smoother than it sounds.  the window outline is clean, bold and symmetrical, with blackened a-, b-, and d-pillars, and with body-colored c-pillars that slant down and back and impart forward motion to the vehicle. With the dark privacy glass, from the shoulders up, in white at least, the explorer looks like a sleek and powerful yacht. The fender flares are inspired by the mustang, body sides follow the lines of the taurus, and new three-bar grille strikes clearly of range rover (formerly in the family). 2009 ford fusion review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Purposeful and comfortable, with responsive handling, the 2009 ford fusion is an excellent choice among midsize sedans. The fusion is available in three trim levels, the s, se and sel. Safety features include side curtain airbags in both rows, seat-mounted side-impact airbags for the front seats, frontal airbags, latch child-seat anchors and rear-door child-safety locks. For 2009, the ford fusion se and sel come standard with satellite radio, and traction control is now standard on all models with v6 engines.

2005 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New models expand superb new lineup. introductionford f-150 has been the best-selling full-size pickup for 27 consecutive years, and it's the most important, most profitable vehicle ford makes. Last year ford threw away the old formula and created a new f-150 from the ground up. At the top is a new king ranch model lavishly outfitted in castano leather. At the bottom is a new v6 model available with an automatic or manual transmission. An inexpensive work truck model has been added as well. In between is the industry's widest variety of body configurations: three cab styles, three bed lengths, two bed styles, and a choice of v8 engines. The f-150 comes equipped with dual frontal airbags designed to deploy according to the severity of the crash and who or what is occupying the seat. The xl, stx, xlt, fx4, lariat, and king ranch each boast their own interior style and features. Engines, suspensions and cab configurations are designed to meet specific needs. Xl is readily identifiable by its black grille and fascia and 17-inch steel wheels, though it comes with chrome bumpers. Xl is available in regular cab or supercab (extended cab) styles. An f-150 xl 4. 2-liter v8 regular cab 2wd automatic short wheelbase retails for $21,455, but a v6 manual will lower that price to $19,610; a long-wheelbase 4x4 v8 automatic supercab is priced at $29,690. (manufacturer's suggested retail prices are subject to change and do not include the destination charge of $795.)  stx is sportier than the xl, with a body-colored grille-surround for the black bar grille, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Stx comes in styleside (flat) and flareside (fendered) body styles, in regular cab or supercab, with either a 6. 5-foot or a 5. 5-foot cargo box. An audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-disc cd changer is optional. Stx starts at $22,285.  xlt is the most popular model, nicer and better-equipped than xl though not as luxurious as lariat. It comes with a honeycomb grille that sets it apart from the other models. Xlt comes in regular cab, supercab or supercrew, with a choice of 5. 5-, 6. 5-, or 8-foot bed lengths, and styleside or flareside body styles. A premium cloth interior is standard on the bench seats or optional captain's chairs. The xlt instrument panel gets more flash than either the xl or stx dash. Supercab, as well as supercrew versions, get power windows for the rear doors. The xlt also features an overhead rail console system that the owner can tailor to his or her needs. Fog lamps come standard on 4x4 xlts. An xlt supercrew 4x4 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $35,275.  fx4 is a special off-road model. The interior features chrome trim and markings, and a floor shifter. Fx4 is available in regular cab, supercab, and supercrew body styles, with either 5. 5-foot styleside or 6. 5-foot flareside or styleside bed designs (no 8-foot bed). The standard engine is the 5. 4-liter v8. The fx4 has its own instrument package as do the rest of the models, with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather are optional, and 18-inch cast aluminum wheels are standard. An f-150 fx4 supercrew retails for $34,605.  lariat is the luxury model. It has its own grille design and comes standard with 18-inch wheels. Lariat features black-on-cream instruments, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power-adjustable floor pedals, an in-dash message center, and climate control. Heated power leather captain's chairs are optional. Lariat 2wd models are available in all three body styles, but 4x4 versions are only available with styleside fenders. An f-150 lariat supercrew 4x4 starts at $35,875.  king ranch features rich castano leather designed to capture the spirit of the historic texas cattle ranch. It comes as a supercrew distinguished by with a color-coordinated grille, arizona beige running boards, and other special trim. Inside are power-adjustable and heated captain's chairs in front, a 60/40 split bench seat in back, and unique interior tri. walkaroundredesigned for 2004, the ford f-150 looks much more manly than the previous-generation models. Its tall shoulders, bold front end and crisp lines give it a more utilitarian look that leaves no doubt that this is a serious truck. It's at least as stylish as the much-heralded dodge ram, but is totally different. In fact, the f-150 has a unique look, no small feat when designing within the hard parameters imposed by a pickup. In short, we think the new f-150 is a great-looking truck.  the f-150 has picked up styling cues from the handsome super duty pickups, including the sharp cut in the forward part of the door, allowing a clear view of the massive outside mirrors. A high beltline gives the truck visual strength and makes occupants feel more secure. The roofline is somewhat reminiscent of chopped-top custom street trucks.  the whole nose is shaped more squarely than the previous generation, which featured more feminine, more car-like curves. The grilles are larger and bolder. The front fascia wraps around to the fenders for a precise, sophisticated appearance. The bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is chiseled, though it looks more slab-sided at the same time, a theme that carries through the tailgate, giving the f-150 an upscale, utilitarian look that's very appealing.  the different trim levels are quite distinctive. Just one example: xlt and lariat have a honeycomb grille (black on xlt, brushed-nickel on lariat), while xl, stx, fx4, and king ranch use a bar-style grille.  practical considerations are a big part of the design, and some of this can be easily seen. Every bed, no matter which length or style, is two inches taller than previous-generation's beds to give more margin when hauling larger cargoes. The supercab (extended cab) doors are larger than the vestigial doors on the standard cab. At the other end of the spectrum is the king ranch, which evokes images of montana and cowboys. Lariat comes with every known amenity.  we found the xlt's front bench seats attractive, but they were flat and lacked support. The front bench is split three ways. They also looked great, trimmed in black leather with light gray stitching. Adjusting the power seats may be a little awkward for drivers with big arms because the clearance between the door armrest and the seat is a little tight; rake adjustment on the power driver's seat is manual, and raking it forward can be a bit awkward. The center console between the captain's chairs is deep and holds a lot of stuff and features a pair of big, solid cup holders. The floor shifter for the automatic works very well.  the radio and hvac controls are plain but straightforward and easy to operate. Giant mirrors afford an excellent view rearward. 2008 ford explorer sport trac review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It comes standard with a 4. 0-liter v6 that makes 210 horsepower, and a 292-hp v8 is optional. The power is delivered smoothly, but isn't as responsive in passing maneuvers as some might wish.  the sport trac's high ride height means the ride quality gets a bit busy over potholed or broken pavement, but otherwise, the ride is smooth, thanks in part to an independent rear suspension that also aids handling. Directional stability is good, steering response is quick, and body lean is well controlled for a heavy vehicle.  inside, the sport trac has easy-to-read instruments and nice materials. Unfortunately, the door pulls are strangely positioned, making them hard to operate for some. Room, on the other hand, is plentiful front and rear. The most notable new feature, available on late-2008 models, is ford's sync communications and entertainment system. New standard features include fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power rear window, a drop-in storage bin, and side curtain airbags. The 4. 0-liter v6 with five-speed automatic transmission comes standard on both trim levels. The 4. 6-liter v8 is an option for both trim levels 1295) and comes with a six-speed automatic. Sundry exterior trim pieces that are painted black on the xlt change to body color or silver on the limited. Rear obstacle detection 295) is optional. walkaroundthe 2008 explorer sport trac looks very much like the 2008 explorer. From just behind the front doors forward, it shares its design with the current explorer. This is part of ford's plan to push brand identity, and why the fronts of ford's light-duty trucks, be they pickups or suvs, wear many of the same design features. Common features with the explorer include the chrome-framed grille, bumper centerpiece, lower air intake, wraparound body-color lower fascia above the blacked-out front air dam, and the signature geometric housings for the compound headlights/running lights.  the 2008 sport trac is considerably longer than the explorer. Wheelbase (distance between the tires front to rear) and overall length (bumper to bumper) are both almost 17 inches longer. Thus, while the explorer is the more people-oriented of the two, the sport trac's longer wheelbase promises a less choppy, more controlled ride. The dodge dakota quad cab is the only other midsize pickup to exceed the sport trac in wheelbase and overall length, and by less than an inch in wheelbase. The sport trac's bed is 4. 5 feet long, the rest around 5 feet.  from the rear, the sport trac looks like a ford pickup. One distinctive aspect is that the sides of the bed and the tailgate rise as much as three inches higher than is the norm in the segment. While this increases the space enclosed by the bed, it definitely makes hefting boxes and bags up and over into the bed more of a strain, a painful trait it shares with the honda ridgeline. By making the sport trac look taller, it also raises the sport trac's visual center of gravity, although the wider body and wider track help to reduce this impression. interiorinside, the 2008 ford explorer sport trac looks a lot like the explorer cabin. Not that it lacks anything by way of necessities or has been saddled with an abbreviated option list, but there's more borrowed than new. The sport trac shares virtually all of its interior, from trim to seat frames, with the explorer.  the instruments are simple and easy to scan. The fuel and coolant gauges are tucked away in the lower, outer quadrants of the tachometer and speedometer; they could be larger and located closer to the driver's line of sight. The center stack is packed with functions but it's intuitively organized, with readily deciphered controls and displays. However, we'd prefer a tuning knob for the radio instead of the sport trac's slow scanning rocker switch.  the optional navigation system pushes the audio controls to the side and either gangs some functions or transfers them to the lcd screen, and it's a clean look. The only real concern here is with the number of components making up the dash assembly. The fewer the components the better, generally speaking, to reduce the number of squeaks as the miles pile up, and the sport trac's dash has one of the highest counts we've seen.  the seats are comfortable, though the bottom cushions front and rear could provide more thigh support. Foot clearance in the rear doorways when climbing in and out is cramped, but once inside, there's decent area beneath the front seats. All five seating positions get three-point seatbelts, but only the front seats and the outboard rear seats get the adjustable full-size head restraints. Comparatively speaking, the sport trac's interior lands squarely in the middle of the segment. The nissan frontier and toyota tacoma have a few tenths of an inch more front-seat headroom, the honda ridgeline almost an inch. The frontier and the ridgeline are tops in rear-seat headroom, but by only tenths of an inch. The chevy colorado has an inch and a half more front-seat legroom but almost two inches less rear-seat legroom. Bottom line, sport trac interior roominess is comparable to that of midsize crew cab pickups.  the sport trac's door panels, borrowed from the explorer, aren't so good. While certain elements are reasonably ergonomic, the placement of the door handles is a prime example of logic gone wrong. Intended to improve occupant protection in side impact crashes by adding crush space, the placement of the door pull below and forward of the armrest puts it where it's awkward to grab hold of and operate. The glove box is adequate. The front center console hosts two cupholders adjacent to the shift gate. Two more cupholders for the rear seat fit behind the front center console's hinged, padded top. The center console is big and deep. The front door map pockets have a space for a water bottle molded into their hard plastic enclosures.  back i.
